Nameless CV"s proposed by Lib Dems to boost work place equality

A radical new proposal to help fight inequalities in employment has been proposed by Lib Dem Spokesperson for Youth and Equalities Lynne Featherstone. Speaking in a House of Commons debate, she suggested Job applications should not bear the name of the person seeking employment, which would see all recruitment efforts conducted under a cloak of anonymity.

The proposal has gained cautious support from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development, stating such a proposal would serve well as best practise guidance rather than a mandatory measure.

"A lot of applications get discarded when people send in a written application for work, and not all are for the right reasons, so this is a way forward to avoid employers subliminally writing off the CV," she said.

"Just as students who sit exams are asked to put a number down instead of their name to ensure the marking is unbiased, so job applicants should put down their national insurance number or phone number or address instead of their name to ensure those who get to interview stage can let their personality shine through."

Earlier in the week Lynne Featherstone had criticised the government for not going far enough with the Equality Bill. She argued a lot of important issues "are being kicked into the long grass". She suggested "powers left to a Minister in future will be powers for a Minister to undo what has been done today, if they should, by any chance, not share an equal conviction in the equality legislation."

The Liberal Democrats also argue that Labour have failed on equalities because income equality has worsened to a level wider than thirty years ago.
