Harman announces launch of Expert Equality Task Force

Speaking at a conference organised by Compass Minister for Women and Equality Harriet Harman has announced the launch of an "Expert Equality Taskforce". The panel aims to scrutinise and investigate the causes of different types of inequality and their possible links with other strands of inequality.

The Taskforce chair and members will be announced in the summer, they are expected to produce an independent report on their findings late in 2009. The members will consist of leading academics with cutting-edge research backgrounds.

Its hinted that there will be an emphasis on social class inequality , which Harriet Harman believes is a form of inequality which is not sufficiently discussed. Speaking at the conference she said:-

"We know that inequality does not just come from your gender or your ethnicity, your sexual orientation or your disability. Co-existing and interwoven with these specific inequalities lies the persistent inequality of social class,".

Upon hearing the news of the task force launch, Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said:

"If we simply put people in categories - gay or straight, man or woman, disabled or able bodied - we risk missing the bigger picture, that economics can be a critical barrier to creating a fairer society where everyone has the chance to fulfil their potential. We look forward to working with the taskforce on this critical issue.”
