I have recently obtained a 1st class BA English degree from the University of Birmingham and am seeking employment in the field of equality, diversity, and inclusion. Within my degree, I have gained a strong understanding of the critical theories and histories underpinning current issues relating to race and gender. I synthesised a variety of research materials in order to produce reports on the extent to which Britain’s cultural institutions upheld imperialist ideologies during the post-war period, as well as more contemporary issues such as the way in which popular fiction by Muslim women is marketed, and the representation of Muslim Americans in television. I am also confident in my ability to campaign for inclusivity in practice as while volunteering as a bid writer for Midland Mencap, I collated quantitative and qualitative research in order to evidence to potential funders the importance of providing sports clubs and social clubs for people with complex physical needs. Additionally, when producing a report for the Birmingham libraries outlining events which they could host in promotion of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, I researched potential partnerships that they could make with BAME-oriented arts organisations and elder-care facilities in order to combat the high rates of loneliness amongst the elderly BAME population. Moreover, as a PR and Marketing intern for St Mary’s Hospice I pitched the prospect of engaging with the Birmingham LGBT Hub in their ‘Ageing with Pride’ campaign which my team was previously unaware of.
