Information Governance

Information Governance, part of Legal Services, is an exciting and fast-paced department handling around 1000 requests for official information and personal data each year. The department is also a driver for wider corporate goals in achieving trust through maximum transparency. Our legislative expertise rests in freedom of information laws, transparency, privacy, and surveillance. We also advise the council on compliance with its equality obligations. The team is small but effective in handling some of the most complex, sensitive and high-profile work at the Council.

Main Duties

The role involves the day-to-day reading and logging of all requests which seek the disclosure of official information or personal data. You will identify information held and look to make that information available to an applicant subject to a string of legal exemptions and, if necessary, any required public interest test. You will also be involved in exciting project work which will require you to provide first-line compliance advice and assistance to other areas of the Council. The department also manages the Council's equality obligations and, as such, you will be required to respond to ad-hoc queries concerning compliance. The main duties are aligned to someone of a personable, supportive but assertive character. And they should be enthusiastic in delivering excellent information governance support in a fast-moving organisation.

Essential Requirements

Interest and knowledge, or willingness to learn, information governance and equality working practice.
Demonstrable experience of working in a positive manner to ensure a best practice approach.
Able to work to tight deadlines, make swift decisions and judgements sometimes based on limited data or information.
Manage heavy workloads flexibly including maintaining a focus on delivery and quality.
Capable of communicating often complex and technical issues effectively, clearly and succinctly to a wide range of audiences including Councillors and an Executive Board.
An appreciation of confidence when handling some of the most sensitive information held by the Council.
A Level or equivalent qualification /or experience.
Attainment or a willingness to work towards a recognised information governance qualification in data protection and/or freedom of information and Environmental Information, and/or records management areas or information security.

Due to the nature of this role, this is a politically restricted post.
