About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe\'s largest research organisations. Through combining world-class facilities with major international collaborations and some of the world\'s most talented staff, we\'re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC is now part of the newly formed UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), which aims to ensure that the UK maintains our world-leading research and innovation position.

About The Role

Following a recent comprehensive Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) audit of our culture, work practices and activities, we\'ve set an ambitious and challenging action plan which aims to embed ED&I into everything we do. We now have a new opportunity for a talented Head of ED&I with responsibility to steer and enable STFC on its journey towards true inclusivity.

As Head of ED&I you will be our in-house expert on key diversity issues with responsibility for strategic leadership of ED&I in the following areas:

  • as an employer - there are 2,000 employees working in multi-disciplinary national laboratories across the UK
  • as a funder - STFC provides research grant funding to UK Higher Education Institutions and other research organisations for research in the fields of astronomy, particle physics and nuclear physics, associated technology development, research infrastructure and knowledge exchange
  • as a partner - STFC works with many UK and international partners. We are committed to promoting diversity in physics and engineering and across the broader scientific spectrum.

You will lead STFC\'s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and Action Plan, ensuring actions are progressed and the strategy is refreshed to reflect STFC\'s ED&I strategic priorities and new focus areas.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • chairing STFC\'s ED&I Policy Group, driving initiatives and projects and ensuring that decisions are implemented and embedded
  • providing up to date understanding of all ED&I matters relating to the research, innovation and campus community within STFC\'s remit and providing expert input into employment legislation developments, current best practice and emerging trends
  • ensuring that STFC meets the requirements of the Public Sector Equality Duty
  • developing and implementing systems and processes to monitor and report on ED&I data and making evidence-based recommendations which further develop our strategy
  • acting as an ambassador for STFC, interacting with our community and representing STFC at events, contributing to the UKRI Shared Capability for ED&I. Your influence will not only benefit STFC but also stakeholders and partners in the UK and internationally
  • leading on the development of submissions to external accreditation schemes such as Disability Confident, Athena SWAN and Stonewall.

The role will involve some UK and International travel.

About You

You should be educated to degree level or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will have extensive experience of developing and leading ED&I projects and initiatives within a diverse organisation, preferably in a STEM community.

You will demonstrate extensive knowledge, experience and understanding of equality and diversity legislation, best practice and ideally the challenges facing STEM academic, research and innovation sectors, specifically in Physics and Engineering disciplines.

You will also have experience of successfully managing and delivering multiple, complex projects and evaluating their outcomes, along with experience of achieving external accreditations. You will be able to demonstrate how you have used energy and commitment and a passion for ED&I to make a difference.

You will demonstrate the ability to use data to measure progress and make evidence-based recommendations which influence policy direction.

You will display exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, interact effectively and influence people at a range of levels across a diverse organisation.
