Strategic Lead (Sport and Physical Activity)

We are looking for an outstanding individual to help deliver our ambition to tackle inequalities and see a more representative and diverse sport and physical activity sector. This is a fundamental and driving principle of our Uniting the Movement, our 10-year strategy, and the equality, diversity and inclusion team will have a key role leading our understanding of audiences and supporting colleagues and partners to fulfil the overall mission and vision.

Sport England’s vision is that everyone in England, regardless of age, background, gender, ethnicity, sexuality or level of ability feels able to engage in sport and physical activity.  We know that certain demographic groups and in particular some women and girls, Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups, socio-economic groups, disabled people, and some LGBTQ+ people, are not participating as much as others.

Reporting to into the Director of Equality Diversity and Inclusion, you will work with and engage key stakeholders and partners to ensure we understand the issues and remove barriers which deny full participation in sport and physical activity. You will be part of a team that will deliver workable solutions and help position our existing and future work so that it has the greatest impact using insight and lived experiences as key fundamentals to our approach.

You will have significant experience of working in equality, diversity and inclusion and have good working knowledge and have a professional and sensitive approach to the challenges that this area of work can present. Role Purpose
 

To work collegiately with colleagues, sharing learning, data and the lived experiences to help understand and remove the barriers to participation in sport/physical activity for all. Proactively help to deliver an inclusive sport and physical activity sector, ensuring that Sport England’s strategic vision for Uniting the Movement to tackle inequalities is successfully delivered through the work.

Skills & Experience
 

Essential

•Proven ability to build and motivate high performing teams and create a learning culture with colleagues that operate across a range of disciplines and working over a wide geographic area.

•Relevant experience in a senior role where diversity, equality or inclusion is an aspect of the work.

•Extensive experience of influencing policy development

•Excellent relationship management skills

•Proven ability to create collaborative relationships, including between organisations who don’t have a history of working together.

•Extensive experience of  advocating and championing the issues of diverse audiences (protected characteristics) and an empathy with the issues these communities face.

•Creative thinker with the ability to pro-actively identify opportunities, define problems and achieve creative solutions.

•Experience of delivering positive outcomes for underrepresented and excluded groups/communities

•Understanding and awareness of the political environment with regards to equality, diversity and inclusion at a national and local level.

•Ability to overcome barriers and solve complex issues, applying sound judgement to make decisions.

•Excellent communication skills, ability to present complex messages at a high level and in an engaging style.

•Ability to review complex data sets and present relevant insights

•Experience of developing positive relationships with senior colleagues and working in a collegiate and supportive way.

Desirable

•Experience of effective evaluation of data sets

•Previous experience of working in a politically sensitive environment
